Madrid's colorful history has helped shape the character of the community, which is
beautifully expressed through the creative talents
of its local artists.
Although the town of Madrid can trace its origin back to its offical founding in 1895,
the presence of the Native American Pueblo Culture and the subsequent Spanish colonial period
still infuses the present with a sense of ancient mystery and cultural diversity
that reveals itself to both the visitor and the local artist alike.
The Turquoise Trail consisting of the Madrid, Golden and Cerrillos area has historically
been known as one of the oldest mining areas in North America.
Famous for the turquoise from the Cerrillos Hills and the Ortiz
goldrush of the 1820's, Madrid's beginning centered around coal mining.
Benefiting from deposits of both bituminous and anthracite (hard coal)
Madrid boomed as a coal mining town, once boasting of a population of several thousand.
Madrid is renown for having the first lighted ballpark west of the Mississippi
that hosted the AA professional baseball team, The Madrid Miners.
Equally renown was its electric lighted Christmas celebration that served
as inspiration to Walt Disney for the creation of Disneyland.
The renovated and restored Oscar Huber Memorial ballpark still stands in tribute
to those days and Madrid is once again, gaining notoriety for its December
Christmas celebration and town parade.
Madrid thrived until the 1940's beginning its decline as competition from gas and
oil continued to erode the profitability of coal mining.
Eventually, upon the closing
of the Albuquerque and Cerrillos Coal Company in 1954, Madrid became a ghost town.
Madrid remained idle and empty until the 1970's when the son of the formal mining
superintendent and then town owner Joe Huber began selling off individual buildings
and parcels to Hippies, veterans, artists and rugged minded individuals seeking an
unregulated lifestyle.
In many ways, Madrid still holds to the principles of living unfettered by the
demands of mainstream society lending it a diversity of people and an openness toward
acceptance that greatly encourages the blending of talents and abilities making Madrid
unique in the way it celebrates creativity.
